Celebrating the spirit of '94

It is particularly appropriate that the 10th anniversary of the Winchester-Laon twinning should coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale. Both events were created to foster understanding, friendship and cultural exchanges between the citizens of Britain and France.

The following extract from the Association's Annual Report for 1994 reminds us of the spirit in which we set out on our twinning journey:

"The importance of the week-end of the 31st May 1994 in Laon and the 8th July 1994 in Winchester was the acceptance by the Civic Authorities of each city to officially endorse the forging of links between our two peoples, to give the citizens of Laon and Winchester an opportunity to have a vested interest in a small corner of another European country, to establish friendships and through these links to understand and value our cultures, traditions and histories".

Eliane Patton, our Chairperson at the time, concluded her report for 1994 with the words:

Continuons ensemble un travail bien commencé!!!

During our coming visit to Laon our hosts plan to recognise this special anniversary with a Vin d'honneur at the Mairie followed by a dinner. For our part the Committee has commissioned a local artist to paint a picture of Cheyney Court which will be suitably dedicated and presented to our friends in Laon to mark this 10th Anniversary.
