PRESS RELEASE RE TWINNING WEEKEND 7-10 JULY 2017
Last weekend the Winchester-Laon Twinning Association entertained 64 visitors from our partner city, a beautiful mediaeval town in Picardy for an action-packed weekend. Saturday was spent in Winchester or at Romsey's Beggars' Fair and in the evening a French choir and Hampshire's 'Madding Crowd' gave a joint concert.
Sunday brought a visit to Portsmouth with visits to the Historic Dockyard and Nelson's flagship HMS Victory. In the evening everyone attended a hog roast where there were short speeches by the presidents of both Laon and Winchester branches of the Association and by Winchester's Mayor, David McLean and Laon's Deputy Mayor, Philippe Mozin. Live music was provided and members enjoyed excellent food and drink, not least a Nebuchadnezzar of champagne (equivalent to15 litres) provided by kind French visitors.
The Winchester-Laon Twinning Association was inaugurated in 1991 and by creating this network of friendships, aims to foster an understanding of each country's culture, traditions and histories. In Winchester events with a French flavour are held throughout the year. New members are welcome and it is not essential to speak French although a few words are useful. Guests and hosts always mange to communicate!
A reminder that subscriptions for 2017-2018 were due on the 1st August. The rates are unchanged from last year, i.e. £15 individual membership or £20 for a family. It would be appreciated if you would pay as soon as possible if you have not already done so. Please send your cheque, payable to Winchester-Laon Twinning Association, to our Treasurer, Elspeth Brown. Alternatively, you may pay by direct transfer to the Associationís Bank Account. Details will be provided on request.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2017
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm on Friday 3rd November, at St Lawrence Parish Room, Colebrook Street, Winchester. It will be chaired by the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor David McLean, who we were pleased to welcome to our Hog Roast on the Sunday evening of our Twinning Weekend. It would be appreciated if as many of you as possible could come to the meeting as it is an important event that gives you all the opportunity to make suggestions about how the Twinning Association is run, but also to volunteer to help us, possibly by serving on the Committee. As one committee member will be standing down at the AGM, we desperately need at least one member to take their place, but more would be welcome!
FETE DES ROIS 2018
Our Fete des Rois party will be held on Friday 5th January, 2018, probably at Otterbourne Village Hall as before, but to be confirmed. Details to follow.
We hope to organise a meal in a restaurant, early in 2018. We are also considering reviving our 'Poisson d'Avril' evening on or about the 1st of April. Suggestions from members would be appreciated.
TWINNING VISIT 2018
As yet we have no firm date for our visit to Laon in 2018 but we anticipate
that it will be in May or early June. Dates have been suggested to our hosts but
we are awaiting their reply. We will let you know as soon as we have more
